With the advancement of modern technology, humans have reached the heights of success and, at the same time, conquered various threats. Cybercrime is a significant issue at the present time. Hackers are always at a pace in their work. So, we need to be very careful while using our computers and cell phones. Apple products are generally known for their security, but we should know how we can secure our device and data with a few efforts. Every MAC provides a File vault, built-in encryption capability to ensure all the MAC data at rest.
1.Update your MAC OS
For security, the primary step towards the prevention of risk is to make sure that the software is up-to-date. It is because a hacker can access all the data from mac OS no matter if you have a strong password through the High Sierra Root bug, which is extremely dangerous. Apple fixed this issue in 2019 by providing OS X 10.13.1 update. To check for updates, go to apple MENU and click on APPSTORE, then click on the UPDATES tab to verify, and then finally the UPDATE button. After updating, you need to fix your root password for future unauthorized access by using a strong password here. Apply the following procedure to check whether the system was addressed in a recent software:
- Choose apple menu>system preferences, then click Users & groups
- Click the lock icon, then enter the name and password of the user
- Click Login options
- Click join
- Now click the lock icon in the Directory Utility window, then enter the administrator name and password
- From the menu bar in directory utility:
- Choose edit>enable root user, then enter the password you want to use for the root
- Else choose edit>disable the root user
2. Privacy Settings
- Here, select Apple Menu on the top left of the screen, go to open system preferences.
- Click on the security & privacy button.
- You can see general, file vault, firewall, and privacy options there.
Enable the firewall
Initially, you need to enable the firewall to prevent unwanted network threats. Here are the steps to activate your firewall
- Click on the Firewall tab in the system preferences > Security & Privacy pane.
- Click the padlock icon at the bottom left
- Click the Turn On Firewall button.
- For the dialog box that appears, click the Enable Stealth Mode box, and your computer will be invisible on public networks.
As you can see, the general section there is meant for passwords, and there are three types of password settings that you should notice. As per your requirement, create a strong password in the options present over there. You can also allow your apple watch to unlock your Mac provided you possess it. At times it is not possible to remember passwords. Luckily, Apple offers iCloud Keychain, which not only saves your password but also suggests good passwords. It can also store personal information, and you can get it by logging in to any of MAC devices.
Turn on Filevault
Now you have seen the file vault option too. With the file vault turned on, all your previous and newly entered data will be automatically locked down. To decrypt it, you need to use the password you have set previously.
Enable stealth mode
In this mode, MAC will not respond to connection attempts from the network. You can find this option in the system preferences>security & privacy>firewall>firewall options. Learn how to configure fire walls for MAC OS. This ensures protection of your device in all platforms.
Here verify what your location is and disable the unnecessary location services. Go to system preferences>security & privacy>privacy>location services.
Set the computer to log out when you’re not using it for a long time. The default for automatic logout is 60 minutes, and you can set it as per your need. Complete this by navigating to system preferences>security & privacy>general>advanced. Here you can also set an admin password to protect against malware.
Review of apps
Review which apps have access to sensitive data, i.e., protect personal data such as contacts, calendars info. Go to system preferences>security & privacy>privacy and check out there.
Check to enable sharing devices.
Check which sharing services are enabled, i.e., disable things like printer sharing, file sharing, Bluetooth, etc., unless you’re sure you need them. Fix this by going to system preferences>sharing.
Lastly, you can install the DuckDuckGo browser, which has built network blocking and smarter encryption while browsing.
