A computer is a complex device. It uses many input and output devices to perform a task. We need different computer devices to enter and get data from the computer. In this post, you’ll get to know about the list of input and output devices along with their description.
You will learn:
Input devices of Computer
Input devices are those devices that are used to give input to the computer. Let’s break it down to make it more easy to understand.
When we want to get any work done by a computer then we need to give it instructions. So, we just can’t ask it simply to do the work. We have to give it input through some devices. If we want to get a calculation performed then we need to enter the numbers with the help of the keyboard.
So, here keyboard is the input device because it helped us to enter the numbers or to give input to the computer. It is that easy. Now you can easily recognize the input device.
Given below is the list of input devices with their functions:
- Graphics Tablets
- Video Capture Hardware
- Barcode reader
A digital camera is used to take photographs and record videos. Photos/videos take with a digital camera are sorted n a memory chip inside the camera. Then the digital camera is plugged into the computer and the images/videos are transferred to the computer for sorting/editing/printing, etc.
A keyboard is used to enter data and instructions into the computer by typing. A standard keyboard has 104 keys, which can be divided into four groups: Typing Keys (Alphabet keys and numeric keys), Function keys(F1 to F12), Navigation keys(Arrow keys, Home, End, Page Up, Page Down, etc), and control keys(Ctrl, Alt, Windows logo key, and Esc).
- MIDI keyboard
Mouse (pointing device)
A mouse is a hand-held pointing device with two buttons and on a wheel on the top of it. It is used to control the movement of a pointer to select the objects and to open files/folders. A mouse is also used to draw pictures.
It is a device that reads the text or pictures printed on a paper and translates the information into a form that a computer understands. There are mainly three types of Scanners: Flat Bed scanner, Sheet Fed scanner and HandHeld, scanner.
Web cameras are also known as “webcams” in short. A webcam is a device connected to the computer for capturing still images and live videos. It is primarily used to share pictures and have live chat with our friends and relatives using the internet.
On a Laptop computer, the touchpad is used instead of a mouse. It is a touch-sensitive pad. We can control the movement of the pointer on the screen by moving the finger on the touchpad.
Pen Input (Light Pen )
A light Pen is a pen-like pointing device. It is used to select objects on the display screen. It is quite similar to a mouse, except that it allows the users to point to the objects displayed on the screen or to draw directly on it. A light pen is only used with Cathode-Ray Tube (CRT) monitors.
A microphone is an input device, which is used to record voice, music and sound into the computer system. Sound cards enable a computer to record sound input from a microphone connected to the computer.
- Electronic Whiteboard
A touch screen is a computer screen, which is sensitive to the touch. We can select the objects directly by touching fingers without using any pointing device, e.g., Tablets, laptops, ATM, Cell Phones, etc.
- Punch card reader
- MICR (Magnetic Ink character reader)
- Magnetic Tape Drive

Output Devices of computer
Output devices are those devices that are used to give the output or result of processed data after processing any input.
It is just the opposite of input devices. As input devices were used to give the data to the computer, output devices are used to get processed data from the computer.
Let’s consider an example: When you double click any song on the computer, it starts playing. So, here mouse was the input device as it was used to give instructions to the computer and the speakers were the output devices as it was giving you the data.
Got it? Now, let’s describe the different types of output devices.
- Monitor (LED, LCD, CRT etc)
- Printers (all types)
- LCD Projection Panels
- Computer Output Microfilm (COM)
- Head Phone
- Visual Display Unit
- Film Recorder
